With everything going on lately, I’ve been wondering how we can better support local businesses across the Island. I try to buy local produce from farmers’ markets and order takeout from independent restaurants, but curious if there are other ways people are pitching in?

Love this thread. I also started tipping more generously when I do eat out or grab coffee. A lot of these small cafes and breweries are barely hanging on. Buying gift cards in advance is another easy way to help with their cash flow. Plus, I’ve discovered some awesome new places by checking VILocal’s “Support Local” section!
That’s a great question! Supporting local businesses is more important than ever. Besides shopping at farmers’ markets and ordering local takeout, I also recommend leaving positive reviews online, sharing businesses on social media, and using the Online Directory in Nanaimo, BC to discover and support new local services. It’s a great tool for finding everything from local artisans to home services. Even small actions like recommending a favorite shop to friends or attending community events can make a big impact. Every bit of support helps keep our local economy strong!
