Stoic’s ‘PAELLA!’ is a Food-Motivated Smorgasbord, made Wide-Ranging by its many Features, tied together by its Production and Theme

The ultimate quality of a good paella is dependent on two things in equal measure: the rice, and all the things that go into it. It’s a dish where the base is so deeply foundational to everything else involved in a given preparation, that no matter the perfection of the fixings, mediocre groundwork can lead to a downright bad final product. On the other hand, the best paella rice crisped at the bottom of the pan into socarrat excellence would probably still pack a punch with something as simple as seasoned ground beef layered on top. Now, if both come to play – and come together seamlessly – it can be one of the best dishes a traveler comes across during a trip ‘round the globe. It’s definitive of an entire city; an entire country – both some of the culinary world’s most respected at that.
Bold yet apt, then, is PAELLA! – the title of Stoic’s new album. It isn’t a surprise when the New York-based, Grammy Award-winning producer and multi-instrumentalist drops something special. But even amongst his accolade-fueled catalogue to date, PAELLA is particularly singular.
The album’s features are many, and are dynamic in scope and style. There are too many to list, without this piece turning into, well… a list, but know that through 14 tracks, there are nearly double the number of guest artists involved. The breadth of collaborators is not too surprising. Stoic is a producer after all, and though his solo work is immersive and transportive, his is a sonic space defined by collaboration. What is surprising, though, is the stylistic range of those artists coming into play, and the fact that even through all the musical breadth, Stoic can keep the project – from beginning to end – consistent to his own auditory aesthetic, and true north to the theme at hand.

The producer makes the intrinsic move of opening the project with PEGAO. Driven by an understated, lyrically unrivalled verse from the modern sage of culinary hip-hop, Blvck Svm, PAELLA! establishes its intent with an amuse-bouche, never curbing its appetite for food-motivated bars, and yet never able to match the thematic adherence that Blvck Svm musters with his cascading textbook of fine-dining terminology walked with quiet confidence into the album’s pole position. Through the rest of the project, the mosaic of rappers’ poeticism and vocalists’ registers is sprinkled, rather than beaten, with nutrient richness. At HEAT UP, Mick Jenkins prefers farm-to-table over the pharmaceutical. At another, the entire hook from HUNTING SEASON brings together Nyck Caution, jev., and CJ Fly for a spoon-fed take on the album’s driving motif. It’s inescapable, tying the project together with blips that confirm the title and artwork.
In case the listener forgot, folded in throughout are also myriad monologuing samples of commercial kitchen speak, pulsating PAELLA! deeper into its discourse, and drawing a listener into a comprehensive listening session.
But the theme itself plays second fiddle when considering PAELLA!’s cohesion. Top to bottom, it’s Stoic’s elasticity as a producer and an instrumentalist – as a composer and editor of all things happening within the album’s world – that pulls it together. His role seems simple, but ultimately paramount. Stoic is the paella’s rice. The rest – the dozen almost two times over who bring their own spice and texture to every song – they’re the dish’s driving force from track to track, ensuring dynamism and flavor. The features are the fixings. And that’s a feature, not a bug.
Stoic has made a career of knowing ball. A catalogue of YouTube-downloadable -type beats has granted him his spot in the industry and introduced him to the artists with whom he shares a Grammy. So, to know ball is to also know his position within his own expansive work. Lay the foundation, strum the bass and guitar, draw a parallel to a well-known quantity, share the theme, and let your friends cook. Out comes PAELLA! and out comes one of the more dynamic yet cohesive projects of the year.
