A look back in time at Theo Croker’s discography is a peak into his artistic evolution. The Florida-rooted trumpeter, composer, producer, and vocalist is one of America’s – one of the world’s – great generational jazz talents, hellbent on redefining the prestige of one of music’s undying pillars. Merely considering his works’ titles grants an image of an artist mastering his foundation to eventually build into his abstract niche.

The Fundamentals introduced his solo work in 2006, ringing of smoky jazz club nostalgia. 2009’s In The tradition is a timeless recording of he and his collaborative quintet playing away at downtempo cuts that occasionally bleed into bluesy intonations. A fast forward 12 years, four albums, and a whole lot of acclaim shines a light on BLK2LIFE || A FUTURE PAST, where what has become his signature in collaborating with immensely talented and renowned vocalists started taking shape. Ari Lennox, Charlotte Day Wilson, and Iman Omari are three names in a larger list that entrenched the 2021 album in soul. And now, Dream Manifest.

His eighth and most recent project was released in June and seamlessly tethers his fundamental roots to his infusion of other stylings. Tempo shifts provide shifts, too, in the emotional direction of the project. At some tracks – like crystal waterfalls– that turn is towards the downtempo, tying the atmospheric lineage of rainy weather jazz with a more hip-hop nuanced drum pattern. Cutting towards a track like up frequency (higher) – which folds in the glistening vocals of MAAD – Theo Croker uses his instrumentation to guide a listener towards something more R&B adjacent. Top to bottom, Dream Manifest rides a mellow, understated tone, meandering through stylistic shifts brought on by featuring artists, but always held steady by the protagonist’s brass.

And now that Grammy-nominated frontman is on the road to bring the sounds of Dream Manifest to stage alongside his immersive live performance. With upcoming dates all across Europe, he’s first headlining four shows in two nights at notorious Denver jazz haunt, Dazzle. No stranger to the live show, he – as one quarter of his touring quartet – has toured the globe and back times over at this point in his esteemed career, playing everything from local clubs – as in Denver – to main staging jazz festivals around the world – including upcoming Jazz Pulsations in Nancy, France.

For fans not only of jazz, and not only of Neo-Soul, but simply of music, period, do not miss Theo Croker’s intimate Denver performances. And if you’re not in Denver, check his dates for your city. He’s touring through the end of the year.
